iPad Insurance Information

TSD iPad Responsibility & Optional Insurance Program for Students in Grades 4-12

Each student in grades 4-12 who wishes to participate in the Troy School District 1:1 Device Insurance Program will be required to pay an annual insurance premium of $25 per student, not to exceed $100 per family. Kindergarten have classroom sets of iPads that are shared in the classroom, and grade 1, 2, and 3 students have 1:1 iPads that remain in the classroom (not brought home), thus, no personal insurance is needed.

The iPad Responsibility form no longer needs to be signed/submitted, as it is covered under the Student Technology Acceptable Use Policy.

Fees for lost iPads are refundable, if iPad is found and turned in.  Fees for stolen iPads are set to $0 with copy of police report.  *Fees up to $300, based on assessment.  **Each occurrence, per current school year + summer.  All intentional damage occurrences may be referred to the principal for possible disciplinary action. Intentional damage may be considered as any damage outside of normal wear, like stickers, writing, and/or cuts. +Stolen iPads have no fee with police report, without police it is considered a Lost iPad.


Fees will be added to PowerSchool Parent Portal under the student and must be paid to receive a replacement device.  ALL fees must be paid prior to graduation or leaving the district. Lost devices can be turned in, if found, for reimbursement. We do not refund or prorate iPad insurance upon leaving or entering the district.

iPad Damage & Deductibles

Student iPads and cases are are covered 100% for the first break with iPad insurance coverage; The cost to replace/repair is $0 for first break.

What if your child breaks or damages the iPad a second or third time?  There is a low-cost $50 deductible fee added to the student account each time the iPad is replaced.  Without insurance the cost of breakage/damage is $300 each occurrence. 

Intentional iPad damage, as determined by district staff, will not be covered with or without insurance and may be subject to disciplinary action. 

Insurance Payment Instructions

Each student in grades 4-12 who wishes to participate in the Troy School District 1:1 Optional Device Insurance Program will be required to pay an annual insurance premium of $25 per student, not to exceed $100 per family.  Contact pssupport@troy.k12.mi.us to have additional iPad Insurance fees waived.

Preferred payment method is by credit card through the PowerSchool Parent Portal.  Cash or *check (payable to Troy School District) will also be accepted at Technology Services, 4420 Livernois, Troy, MI 48098. *Checks must include student(s) name(s), grade(s) and school(s). One check per family, no need to submit a check for each student.

Free & Reduced Waiver for iPad Insurance

Students who qualify for free and reduced lunch will be exempt from insurance premium payments, but not deductibles.  Any family who is financially unable to pay for the premium should fill out the Free and Reduced-Price School Meals, which can be found on the Troy School District Food & Nutrition webpage.  You MUST OPT-IN to the Sharing Information With Other Programs - check the box by "Programs that provide school supplies or assist with school fees".

What Does iPad Insurance Cover?

Optional iPad Insurance covers damage (that is not intentional) to the device and case while in school, off school grounds (home, other location), theft (with copy of police report), fire (with copy of claim), flood (with copy of claim), and natural disaster. Technical issues are covered without fees, unless they are caused by damage to the device.

How to Purchase iPad Insurance through the PowerSchool Parent Portal

  • Log into the PowerSchool parent portal.
  • Choose your child from the right corner dropdown (if you have more than one child in the district).
  • Select the Arrow Box icon in the top menu bar.

Exclusions

  • Damages do not cover loss that occurs in conjunction with being dishonest, fraudulent, intentional or a criminal act.
  • *Missing or Lost iPads will incur a replacement fee (not to exceed $300 per device)
  • *Missing or Lost iPad Case will incur a replacement fee (not to exceed $100 per case)
  • iPads should NEVER be removed from their cases!

Troy School District encourages and strongly promotes the use of technology in educational settings. To ensure students, staff and parents can take full advantage of the technologies available, all use of technology in the school district must have proper authorization and adhere to district policy. All use of technology must be in support of and consistent with the purposes and stated goals of the school district. Misuse of technology will result in disciplinary action.


Technology Guidelines:

  • Students shall not use technology unless authorized by appropriate school personnel.
  • Only software legally owned by the district and authorized by a TSD administrator may be put on district computers.
  • Illegal/inappropriate activities of any kind are forbidden.
  • Students shall not use district technology for online purchasing or any other non-TSD education/personal purposes.
  • Nothing will be placed on a building web page without prior approval of the building principal or district administrator. Web pages representing Troy School District will only be placed on district-authorized web servers.
  • Establishment of web pages and/or distance learning activities must have an educational/management purpose related to an assignment, project, job or function that meets TSD goals.
