May 21, 2024 - Bargaining UPDATE

The Troy School District and the TEA bargaining teams have had four bargaining sessions since April 16 and a total of 15 sessions to date. Most recently, meetings have focused on the school calendar with the district and the TEA bargaining teams making significant progress. Our administration seeks a competitive compensation package that will attract new and retain current staff and is sustainable over time. Both parties agree that Troy's pay schedule should be aligned and among the tops in Michigan, and both teams will work collaboratively to that end. This year's bargaining cycle across the state has been uniquely complex due to several formerly prohibited topics such as evaluation, teacher placement, etc. This has elongated the bargaining process here in Troy and across the state. The Troy School District will utilize a portion of our fund balance to settle this contract. Both parties have agreed to bring in a Michigan Employment Relations Commission (MERC) mediator to assist in finalizing an agreement. The district's two most recent contracts have also been settled with the help of an independent mediator. The first mediation session will take place Wednesday, May 22 with additional sessions planned depending on need.


April 16, 2024

The District and TEA bargaining teams have had 3 bargaining sessions in the last week. The teams continue to make steady progress towards a successor agreement. The teams exchanged economic and language proposals. The teams have reached a tentative agreement on one of the more complex, formerly prohibited topics. 

The tone of the sessions continues to be positive and collaborative. Additional bargaining dates have been scheduled in May and June (if needed). The discussion will turn to calendar options at the next meeting on April 29. We continue to be focused on finalizing an agreement that is fair and equitable and will address our objectives of recruitment, retention, and sustainability.


March 19, 2024

The District and TEA teams had their most productive bargaining session to date on Wednesday, March 13. We have now had a total of 8 bargaining sessions. The District has offered language proposals on all of the prohibited topics, along with proposals on wages, calendar, and a variety of other relevant topics. We have reached tentative agreements on a number of language proposals and anticipate continued progress toward additional TA’s. The teams have agreed to 6 additional sessions on April 3, 10, 12, 16, 29 and May 3rd. We anticipate that these sessions will be productive with the goal of achieving a successor agreement that is sustainable and focuses on our goals of attracting and retaining great teachers. We are ready, willing, and able to continue to bargain in good faith, and we anticipate that the TEA is as well.
