Academics

The Troy School District offers a comprehensive program for students throughout the K-12 years.

Elementary

It iss the elementary grades when children's natural desire to learn must be encouraged and developed into skills they'll need in the future. The 12 Troy elementary schools, all with kindergarten through fifth grade, do this by providing students a strong core curriculum that includes:

  • Language arts/reading, writing, social studies, mathematics, and science
  • Conversational Spanish
  • Art, vocal music, physical education, health education, and media technology
  • Instrumental music (band and strings starting in fifth grade)

Troy elementary schools also offer extracurricular activities that appeal to elementary students' interests. A few of the many offerings include:

  • Service squad, safety patrol, an student government
  • Computer, science, writing, Spanish, and Great Books clubs
  • Michigan Math League, Math Counts, and Geography Bowl programs
  • Chorus

In concert with other education professionals, special education teachers develop individual learning goals to meet the needs of special education students. To promote positive interaction with other students, placing special education students in regular classrooms is encouraged.

Middle School

During the middle school years, students become individuals, with their own thoughts and their own personalities. They Troy School District's four middle schools take that into account. Focusing on math, language arts, social studies, and science, an extensive core curriculum builds on the educational groundwork already established in elementary.

But as these students grow, so does their need to explore the world they're just discovering. For them, Troy schools provide exploratory and elective offerings such as:

  • Foreign languages, including Spanish, French, German, Latin and Japanese
  • Computer training
  • Industrial technology
  • Multimedia and journalism
  • Art., vocal music, band, orchestra and drama program
  • Career Pathways, a structured educational system which provides students the necessary academic, technical and work behavior, knowledge and skills for success in a career of their choice and lifelong learning.

Outside the classroom, students are active in a multitude of extracurricular programs, such as intermural and intramural athletics, student government, yearbook, Michigan Math League and forensics.

As they move to their next level of education, Troy middle school students have a better sense of where they're going and are better prepared to make it there.

High School

In southeastern Michigan, Troy's high schools stand out. In fact, Athens and Troy High are in the national spotlight, recognized by Newseek for their excellence, and have been designated national Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. The schools are accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and are among the largest feeders in the state and the nation to the University of Michigan and Michigan State.

The Troy School District is preparing the nation's top graduates through a strong core curriculum of English, social studies, math, and science, with an expansive number of elective classes, 19 advanced placement courses, and opportunities for all students to reach their potential.

In addition to Athens and Troy High, students who require a nontraditional educational environment may attend Niles Community High School, an in-district alternative.

Troy students are also able to enroll in the international Academy at the school's new east campus in Troy.

Vocational programs at the Oakland Technical Education Center in Royal Oak and the GM Technical Academy in Auburn Hills are also available to Troy School District students, along with numerous vocational education programs offered on-site at Athens and Troy high schools.

And of course, students can take advantage of numerous extracurricular programs, a few of which are listed below:

  • National Honor Society, Project L.E.A.D., student government, SADD, and peer mediation
  • 26 boys's and girls' athletic teams, including football, basketball, baseball, cross country, wrestling, gymnastics, swimming and hockey
  • Science, engineering, computer, foreign language, literary, ski and environmental clubs
  • Newspaper, yearbook and web site design
  • Drama, forensics, and debate.

The Troy School District takes seriously its role in helping high school students become young adults. In partnership with their parents, we support our students as they gain the responsibility and independence that come with age.

International Baccalaureate Programs

The Troy School District is one of only two communities in Michigan with K-12 authorized International Baccalaureate offerings. Programs are offered at Morse Elementary, Baker Middle School and the east campus of the International Academy. The IB programs provide a high quality, challenging educational environment that encourage students to become life-long learners, and fully engaged citizens who embrace their own culture and are open to the views and cultures of others
