Larson students, staff "MIX IT UP!"

Students at Larson Middle School reached out and made new friends during "Mix It Up" Day. This is a nationwide event where students are encouraged to meet new people and have a blast doing it. At this year's event, instead of sitting with the same group at lunch, Larson students were assigned tables based on the month of their birthdays. As you can see by the smiles, Mix It Up was a huge success!
Dr. Barbara Fowler, Superintendent of Schools and Dr. Richard Machesky, Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education stopped by to see the event in action--and walked away impressed with the conversations and camaraderie they saw among the students. Way to go, Larson!
Board members, students connect on issues

Students from all four Troy high schools had the chance to share their viewpoints face-to-face with members of the Troy Board of Education at a bi-annual breakfast Wednesday morning. Above, Trustee Wendy Underwood queries students on preparing for their future and Trustee Todd Miletti listens as a student explains her goals. Below, Board Secretary Paula Fleming, Trustee M'Liz Malven, Vice President Ida Edmunds and President Nancy Philippart visit with students and hear their dreams and concerns. Throughout the year, Board Members reach out to students to share their experiences.

Troy High teacher is NATIONAL UNSUNG HERO!
Rebecca Brewer, an advance placement biology teacher at Troy High School, was recognized as the nation’s most innovative educator in the 2011 ING Unsung Heroes® Awards Program (www.unsungheroes.com). Through this program, ING awards educators throughout the United States grants for innovative teaching ideas. Brewer, seen here on the right with her students, was presented with a check for $27,000 to help fund her award-winning project, “Mini-Med School” at Troy High School.
“Mini-Med School: Simulating Surgeries,” is designed to move 11th and 12th grade biology students at Troy High School from simply dissecting preserved specimens to also performing mock surgical procedures on the organs.
Congratulations, Mrs. Brewer!
