TSD Matters involves community in process to study finances

The entire Troy community is invited to become involved in an initiative that will help determine the financial future of our schools.

The initiative, called TSD Matters, will initially involve an educational meeting to discuss school finance and the current financial position of the Troy School District.

Interested community members can choose one of the following meetings:

  • November 10, at 4:00 p.m;
  • November 11, at 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.; and
  • November 16, at 7:00 p.m.

Child care will be offered on November 16 and all of the informational meetings will be held at the Services Building, 4420 Livernois. The meetings are expected to last approximately two hours. The agenda for each meeting will be identical.

Following the meeting, participants will be updated on a regular basis regarding financial issues in the district, and avenues for input and information on how the district is addressing the school funding crisis.

In conjuction with this process, the district is also conducting focus groups that contain representatives from each of the major stakeholder groups, such as community, staff, parents, business leaders and students.

The TSD Matters process will continue through the development of the 2010-2011 school year.

If you plan to take advantage of the child care services, please e-mail your name, student name, and the age of your student to Tim McAvoy, the director of community relations.

The TSD Matters process will ensure the district continues to be proactive in determining its financial future. Since the 2002-2003 school year, the Troy School District has made budget adjustments and used fund equity for a total of approximately $50 million. Recently, the State of Michigan announced approximately $6.5 million in additional revenue cuts for this school year.

For more information on the district's finances, please see this link. Regular updates on Michigan's school funding crisis and its impact on the Troy School District are available at this link.
