Fiscal report shows TSD a leader in direct funds to the classroom
The Troy School District’s administrative and support costs are the seventh lowest among nearly 400 Michigan school districts, according to a recent analysis.
The analysis, conducted by the Michigan Senate Fiscal Agency, also found that the Troy School District’s noninstructional costs were among the lowest in Oakland County.
“The analysis demonstrates that we are an efficient organization that is a leader when it comes to ensuring our resources support our classrooms,” said Superintendent Dr. Barbara Fowler.
The analysis defined noninstructional expenses as general administration, school administration, business services, central services, operations and maintenance services, and transportation services.
The Senate Fiscal report mirrored the results of two other recent studies on school budgets. Those reports, conducted by the Detroit Free Press and the Oakland Intermediate School District, placed Troy as having the highest percentage of the budget committed to instructional expenditures in Oakland County.
The Senate fiscal agency conducted the analysis for pending legislation that would require districts to limit administrative expenses to 28 percent of their budget, which would impact half of the communities analyzed in the report. According to the report, the Troy school district’s spending on administrative and support costs were 22.4 percent of its budget.
The agency created the analysis using reports submitted by local school districts for the 2007-08 school year.
