(Top row left to right: Susan Pickering, Mark Cavataio, Debbie Brorson; Bottom row, left to right: Pamela Mulligan, Glenn Rexer, Gretchen Vogelei)

SIx Troy School District teachers were recently honored at a Board of Education meeting as nominees for Teacher of the Year. These exemplary educators were nominated by parents, students and their fellow teachers for their abililty to inspire, teach, motivate and encourage young minds. Without exception, every nominee is a teacher who goes above and beyond each and every day. We salute the following nominees and thank them for their service to our students: Susan Pickering (Media Specialist--Boulan Park MS and Smith MS), Mark Cavataio (Wass Elementary), Debbie Brorson (Schroeder Elementary), Pamela Mulligan (Hill Elementary), Glenn Rexer (Smith Middle School) and Gretchen Vogelei (Martell Elementary.)

Mr. Cavataio was also named the TSD Elementary School Teacher of the Year and Mrs. Pickering was named the TSD Middle School and Overall Teacher of the Year.

Morse students win prestigious science competition

If your car has ever slid in slippery conditions, there‘s no doubt you‘ll appreciate the vision of four fifth-grade students at Morse Elementary School. This remarkable team designed a safer tire—and were named Regional Winners of ExploraVision, a national science contest with some pretty stiff competition.

Siddarth Marthi, Henry Barton, Prashant Shanakar, and Sribharat Koripella worked with teacher Jodi Martin to envision a smart car with tires that adjust to road conditions, like rain or sleet. Their invention, called "The Tread Transforming Smart Car" uses satellite technology to recognize whether conditions, then sends a message to the car‘s computer that a certain tread would be the safest for those conditions. Electromagnets would be placed inside the tires and a current would be injected to change the tread.

The team, with the support of parent/mentors Kenneth Barton and Bascer Marthi, submitted the idea to the ExploraVision competition—and it was selected among 4800 entries. As part of their prize, each student received an underwater camera and Morse received a Toshiba laptop.

The Morse Smart Car project now advances to the national competition with 24 other projects across the country. The team will work to devise a website for their proposal—and hope to hear in April that they are national winners!
If you would like to read more about the project—and what the Morse team accomplished, see this story in the Troy Times or visit ExploraVision.

Athens students raise more than $35,000 during Charity Week

AHS Student Council Members, along with the entire student body and staff, raised $35,113.41 this week for the I Got Your Backs foundation, an organization that educates, impacts and inspires hope in youth in need. (The photo was taken before the Charity Dance Friday night.) The foundation honors the memory of Isaac Loughrige whose life was cut short due to contracting H1N1 flu virus and acute pneumonia. Click HERE For more information on the foundation.

AHS students contributed from their own pockets and held fundraisers and challenges all week long. Charity week at Athens has become a tradition of giving that grows bigger every year. We salute these students and staff for their tireless efforts to give of themselves and their time.

SCHOOLS OF CHOICE
Lottery results

All lists are alphabetical by student last name. The Baker Middle School list also includes grade level.

Click HERE for the results of the Kindergarten lottery.
Click HERE for the results of the First Grade lottery.
Click HERE for the results of the Baker MS lottery.

Reminder--there are 100 spots available in Kindergarten, 30 spots in First Grade and 25 spots at Baker Middle School. If your child's number is lower than or equal to those numbers, you will receive information regarding registration on May 1st. Those students have until May 18th to register. After that date, students will lose their spot and we go to the next name on the lottery list.

You may notice that the lists do not begin with the number 1. This is because state regulations dictate that siblings of our current Schools of Choice students are admitted first, so those students occupy the first spots in our Schools of Choice program.
